Trialling the Fairlie steam locomotive, 1869

Victorian illustration to download showing a picture of experimental trials of the Fairlie steam locomotive, 1869: Fairlie’s design was a small engine supported by swivelling powered bogies with all wheels driven, suitable for narrow-gauge railways. Following these trials, Fairlie (1830-1885) supplied his ‘Little Wonder’ engine to the Ffestiniog Railway (which uses Fairlie engines to this day) and similar engines to railways world-wide.
