Illustration to download showing the Oval in 1880. This famous cricket ground dates back to the 1790s when an oval road was laid around what was originally a market garden. One of the Grade II listed Victorian gasometers is still standing, and has been a part of the vista since 1847. In the illustration England are battling in a Test Match against Australia (the first was held in 1877). A crowd of 25,000 enjoyed the spectacle of W G Grace displaying his incredible batting skills and remaining at the crease for four hours. England turned out the winners.
