Steam train crosses Alderbottom Viaduct, Lancashire

Victorian illustration to download showing a steam locomotive pulling a train of goods wagons crossing the Alderbottom Viaduct on the Stubbins to Accrington branch of the East Lancashire Railway. The viaduct, stone piers with iron girders above, spans a river. On its banks cattle graze, fishermen chat, and a woman sits with her children. The railway line was constructed in 1848; the engineer was John Shae Perring (1813-69), engineer and explorer, Resident Engineer for the East Lancashire Railway.
