Victorian illustration to download showing a picture of a young soldier who has lost his leg. He stands beside his bed in a military hospital, propped up on crutches. This scene was sketched during the Crimean War in 1855. The Illustrated London News commented: ‘This poor fellow was hit, at the battle of the Alma, by a chain-shot, which, he says, he did not feel. The sufferer lay upon the field until the following afternoon, when his leg was amputated.’
