Skye crofter using foot plough (cas chrom)

Victorian illustration to download showing a picture of a crofter on the Isle of Skye, Scotland, using a cas chrom (meaning ‘crooked foot’), a tool used for cultivating steep, rocky ground where it is not possible to use a plough. The cutting edge is reinforced by a sharp piece of iron, and a protruding peg enables the crofter to use his foot to force the blade into the ground. From small sketched original.
