Shipyard, the mast house, 1841

Victorian illustration to download showing a picture of men in the mast house of a shipyard constructing a mast for a sailing ship, 1841. A mast was made in sections and bound together with iron hoops. Here, two teams of men drive a hoop down the mast with blows from a ‘poker’, and two men strike the hoop with hammers to bind the wood tightly. This scene was sketched in Green, Wigrams and Greens shipyard, Blackwall, London.
