Sailor gets electric shock in museum

Victorian illustration to download showing a picture of a sailor in a science museum. He holds the handgrips of an electric machine. He is tense and stands on tiptoe, and his face is astonished – it is clear that he is experiencing an electric shock. His sailor friend and a crowd of men, women and children look on and laugh. In the background a poster reads: ‘Lecture on the Infernal Machine’. This illustration shows the Polytechnic Institution, Regent Street, London, which aimed at providing popular education. There were lectures and magic lantern shows, and exhibits including machinery and a large water tank with a diving bell and a model ship.
