Miners in alum mine

Victorian illustration to download showing miners at work in an alum mine. The miners wear caps (or helmets), each with a lighted candle fixed to it. Some miners are naked to the waist. Two men extract the ore with pick and shovel, while four men wheel the ore in barrows. In the background a horse pulls a trolley laden with corves (baskets) full of ore. In the foreground a man sleeps, his dog beside him. This scene was sketched at the Hurlet alum works near Glasgow in 1843.
