Launch of the ship ‘Marion Macintyre’

Victorian illustration to download showing the launch of the iron-framed ship ‘Marion Macintyre’, built at Jordan and Getley’s shipyard, Liverpool, in 1851. Many flags fly as she slides into the water, and onlookers cheer. In front is the iron frame of another ship under construction. This was a pioneering method of shipbuilding at this time; the iron frame gave strength, lightness (so that the ship could carry more cargo), and a longer life than ships built entirely of wood.
