Large gasholder under construction

Victorian illustration to download showing a picture of a large gasholder under construction. The huge cast iron cylindrical structure is being built with the aid of cranes. In the foreground barges bring building materials to the site. This is a depiction of the Imperial Gas Company’s works at Bethnal Green, London, in 1858. The diameter of the gasholder was 201 feet and it had a capacity of 2,500,000 cubic feet. About 1500 tons of iron were used to build it.
