Victorian illustration to download showing high tide on the River Thames; water reaches the base of the Old Royal Naval College (designed by Wren and Hawksmoor) and laps around the obelisk memorial to Bellot, a French naval officer who died in 1852 during the expedition to find Sir John Franklin. This exceptionally high tide, in March 1860, flooded London’s streets and damaged many buildings.
