Fisher girls and fishermen

Victorian illustration to download showing a picture of a large group of fisher girls and fishermen walking back up a beach at low tide. The girls are carrying large baskets full of ?prawns. One girl wears sabots, the others are barefoot. The fishermen carry their rolled-up nets. They have caught the prawns by fixing the nets into the sand rather than by fishing from boats. This illustration was engraved from the painting ‘The Fishers’ Return’ by Auguste Feyen-Perrin (1826-88), a French painter specialising in genre scenes. He used to spend his summers in Brittany painting scenes from the lives of Breton peasants and fishermen. He exhibited at the Paris Salon, and was a friend of Courbet.
