Fish auction in a market hall

Victorian illustration to download showing a fish auction in a market hall. The auctioneer stands on a platform, a box of fish at his feet, and the bidders crowd round him. This is Columbia Market, Bethnal Green, London, founded in 1869 by the philanthropist Angela Burdett-Coutts (1814-1906) ‘to be used for the benefit of the poorer classes as a market for cheap articles of food’ – she wanted a fish market here because fish was both cheap and healthy.
