Fighting contest: quarterstaff match

Victorian illustration to download showing a picture of two men taking part in a ‘fighting’ contest – a quarterstaff match. Heavily padded, and wearing face masks, they attack each other with long staves, watched by many spectators. This was part of the Honourable Artillery Company’s Assault of Arms, an annual event of trials of skill and strength, including fencing, boxing, clubs and sword fighting.
