Excavating underground railway tunnel

Victorian illustration to download showing a picture of the construction of the tunnel for the Metropolitan District Railway’s underground railway on Thames Embankment, Westminster. This line, from South Kensington to Westminster, opened in 1868; the trains were pulled by steam locomotives. Navvies dig and construct retaining walls; earth and rubble is hauled by horse and cart.
