Electric light experiment

Victorian illustration to download showing a picture of a public experimental exhibition of electric light on the steps of the National Gallery, 1848. A bright light shines, enclosed in glass, with a reflector behind it. The Illustrated London News in reporting this event had doubts about the practical use of electric light, calling it ‘a costly experimental toy’.
