Crimea: hospital laundry dryer

Victorian illustration to download showing a picture of a device for drying laundry at Scutari hospital during the Crimean War, 1855. The drying closet was paid for by the philanthropist Angela Burdett Coutts (1814-1906). The closet, designed by engineer William Jeakes, could dry 1000 articles in 25 minutes. Six clothes horses are enclosed in a double thickness of corrugated iron with the space between insulated with earth or sand. The boiler also heated water for washing clothes in the attached trough.
