Victorian illustration to download showing a picture of a court martial. A naval captain has just been acquitted; an admiral hands him back his sword. This was Captain Thrupp of the Megaera, acquitted of the loss of his ship at a court martial aboard HMS Duke of Wellington in Portsmouth, 1871. The Megaera had sprung a leak in her iron plates off the Cape of Good Hope; rather than risk carrying on to Australia, Captain Thrupp had beached her on the island of St Paul.
