Colliery winding engine

Victorian illustration to download showing a cutaway diagram of a colliery (coal mine) winding engine powered by steam. Steam in the cylinders powers the piston rods, which turn the rope drum. The ropes raise and lower the lifts which carry men, equipment and coal at a coal mine. This engine was exhibited at the Paris International Exhibition, 1867.
