Collecting for charity in the street

Victorian illustration to download showing a picture of a street collection for charity, the Hospital Saturday Fund, founded 1873. The idea was that all in employment could give a weekly contribution on Saturdays – Saturday was pay day. A woman sits behind a table on which is a collection box; passers-by crowd round to contribute. This charity still exists, giving grants to individuals and hospitals.
