Victorian illustration to download showing a picture of child labour in a brickyard, 1871. Two little girls, barefoot and in ragged clothes, are sifting coal dust outside the kilns. This was hot, dirty work and bad for the lungs: the Graphic magazine of June 1871 reported that children who did this work were ‘continually expectorating coal dust’.
