Victorian illustration to download showing the women’s gallery in Bethlem Royal Hospital, Souhwark, a lunatic asylum. The long room is airy and well-lit, with flowers in vases and in hanging baskets, pictures and portrait busts on the walls, Wardian cases with ferns on window-sills, and a large aviary. The inmates look calm, although in the foreground a troubled and anxious young woman hurries forward carrying a pile of dishes. Bethlem (or Bedlam) has moved and been re-built many times. This building, completed in 1815 and extended in 1845, now houses the Imperial War Museum.
