Engraving by Hogarth showing two apprentice silk weavers in a Spitalfields workshop, the first in his ‘Industry and Idleness’ series of 1747. One apprentice works hard, his copy of ‘The Prentices Guide’ beside him. The other sleeps leaning against his loom; a cat plays with his unused shuttle, and his ‘Guide’ is torn and dirty. The master weaver, stick in hand, looks angrily at the lazy apprentice. On the floor stand a spinning wheel and a warping reel.
