American barber’s shop

Victorian illustration to download showing a picture of a young black American barber shaving a customer with a cut-throat razor. Another customer reads his newspaper as he waits. This engraving is after the painting ‘A Barber’s Shop at Richmond, Virginia’ by Eyre Crowe (1824-1910), an English painter of historical and genre scenes and social realism. In the early 1850s he travelled in America with the writer Thackeray. This painting was exhibited in London in 1861.
